The 10 largest automotive suppliers in the world 2021

Automotive suppliers are under pressure. German suppliers continue to dominate the market, but Chinese companies in particular are pushing ahead. Ranking the ten largest automotive suppliers in 2022.

Raw materials, semiconductor shortages and pandemic: Despite the difficulties, business for many automotive suppliers was significantly better in 2021 than in the previous crisis year. The turnover of the 100 largest automotive suppliers worldwide rose to 899 billion euros last year. That is an increase of a good 13 percent compared to the previous year. For automotive suppliers, this means that sales are approaching pre-crisis levels.

In the record years of 2018 and 2019, the industry’s turnover was €917.8 billion, up around two per cent on 2021. The profitability of automotive suppliers also rose to around 6.3 per cent on average last year.

Chinese car suppliers catch up

But although the world’s largest automotive suppliers have basically recovered, things are going well for Chinese suppliers in particular. This is due in particular to the rising global demand for e-cars. Chinese auto supplier CATL is the world’s largest battery manufacturer and saw sales grow more than 180 per cent year-on-year in 2021 due to increased demand for e-cars. Overall, Chinese auto suppliers saw the largest revenue gains at 40 per cent.

 

Bosch, ZF or Conti: These German suppliers profit from electromobility

The industry is now extensively involved in electromobility. The world’s largest supplier Bosch, for example, says it generated one billion euros in sales with e-mobility last year. The Friedrichshafen-based supplier ZF can secure an order volume of 14 billion euros in 2021. In addition to the two corporations, German companies such as Continental, Dräxlmaier and Leoni can also improve their positions in an international comparison. On average, they increase sales by double-digit percentages compared to the previous year.

 

The ten largest automotive suppliers in the current 2022 ranking

1st place: Bosch, Germany
The world’s largest automotive supplier, Bosch, comes from Germany again this year. The company was able to achieve sales of 45.4 billion euros in 2021 – this corresponds to a growth of 7.8 percent compared to the previous year 2020. In 2020, sales had still amounted to 42.1 billion euros.

2nd place: Denso, Japan
In second place among the world’s largest automotive suppliers in 2022 is the Japanese automotive supplier Denso with sales of 41.7 billion euros. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 6.6 percent.

3rd place: Continental, Germany
With Continental, another German automotive supplier is among the largest suppliers in the world. In 2021, Contintenal achieved a turnover of 38.2 billion euros. Although the German automotive supplier was only able to increase its turnover by 1.3 percent compared to the previous year, Continental is still the third largest automotive supplier in the world.

4th place: ZF Friedrichshafen, Germany
With a turnover of around 34.9 billion euros in 2021, the automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen from Germany occupies the fourth place of the largest automotive suppliers in 2022. Despite the ongoing crises, ZF Friedrichshafen was able to increase its turnover by 17.5 percent compared to the previous year 2020.

5th place: Magna, Canada
Despite all the crises, the Canadian automotive supplier Magna generated a turnover of 32 billion euros in 2021. In 2020, the supplier’s turnover had still been 28.6 billion euros. This corresponds to an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous year.

6th place: Hyundai Mobis, South Korea
Hyundai Mobis is the only Korean automotive supplier in the top ten and ranks sixth among the largest automotive suppliers worldwide. The company achieved sales of around 31 billion euros in 2021 and increased its sales by a whopping 13.8 per cent compared to 2020.

7th place: Aisin, Japan
In seventh place among the largest automotive suppliers in the world in 2022 is the automotive supplier Aisin from Japan. With a turnover of 29.8 billion euros, Aisin was able to increase its turnover by around 6.4 percent compared to the previous year.

8th place: Michelin, France
Michelin is also one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world. In 2021, the French automotive supplier made a turnover of about 23.8 billion euros. This corresponds to an increase of 16.2 percent compared to the previous year – eighth place in the ranking.

9th place: Bridgestone, Japan
The Japanese automotive supplier Bridgestone ranks ninth among the largest automotive suppliers in 2022. The company’s turnover in 2021 was 20.4 billion euros, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to the previous year.

10th place: CATL, China
In tenth place among the world’s largest automotive suppliers is the Chinese company CATL. The Chinese automotive supplier achieved a turnover of around 18.1 billion euros in 2021. This corresponds to a change of plus 183.5 percent compared to 2020. Compared to the previous year, the battery manufacturer thus makes up 24 places in the ranking and is clearly the biggest winner among the automotive suppliers in 2022.
