Porsche paves the way for Google deal

Summary

Porsche paves the way for Google deal

According to a media report (Manager Magazin), Porsche wants to integrate Google’s infotainment system for cars into its on-board computer. The sports car manufacturer has decided to do so after a long period of hesitation and is negotiating a deal with the US tech company.
Android Auto has only been available in Porsche vehicles for a short time. And this is only the smartphone app.
Apps such as Google Maps or paid offers would then be integrated into Porsche’s own infotainment and would not have to be imported via the smartphone. According to the report, the background is the failure of VW subsidiary Cariad’s own software projects. Among others, Google, Apple, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba were on the shortlist for automated driving and infotainment technology. Does this mean that Porsche wants to rely on Android Automotive, only now with the full “Google Automotive Services”?
This deal may come about because Porsche probably does not want to and does not have to release all vehicle data to Google, customers are increasingly demanding popular services such as Google Maps and, in addition, the Android Automotive OS operating system can now be customised or adapted much better by manufacturers.

If the automotive sector is like the smartphone industry, why should every OEM want to reinvent everything?

Thus, the cooperations in the automotive sector with IT techs continue.
As already reported among others:
Stellantis is cooperating with Amazon, Foxconn and Qualcomm;
BMW uses Android;
VW is working with Microsoft for the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud; and
– VW / Audi plans to use Android Automotive OS
Polestar integrates Google Android Automotive Operating System;
Sony Honda Mobility with its own brand Afeela;
