Electric platforms of the car manufacturers – an overview

Summary

The LEGO principle

The principle is simple, anyone who played with LEGO as a child will remember well: many different things can be put together from a set of same individual parts. The car makers are increasingly resorting to this principle and iIn the process, the platforms are designed from scratch. It is the key to the breakthrough of electromobility – only with standardised platforms can battery vehicles (Also applies to combustion engines, of course) produced cheaply and in a wide variety. It reduces the complexity. The development of electric vehicles (BEV – battery electric vehicle, PHEV – plugin hybrid electric vehicle) is being pushed forward by almost all vehicle manufacturers.
All electric platforms usually consist of three main components. At the centre of the platform is the battery pack, which is housed in the underbody and protected by a solid frame to guarantee the integrity of the lithium-ion cells in the event of an impact. The front and rear of the car are docked to the power storage unit.

driving stability
The E-platforms improve driving dynamics, handling in curves and increase driving stability at high speeds. Thanks in particular to the low centre of gravity of the vehicle due to the battery unit in the floor area and the optimal weight distribution between front and rear. The fast-revving electric motor ensures high driving dynamics.
